Jedenspeigen – castle, the 1278 battlefield and lunch next door in Dürnkrut

Jedenspeigen lies only about four kilometres north of Dürnkrut. Between the two villages the Battle on the Marchfeld took place in 1278, in which Rudolf of Habsburg defeated King Ottokar II of Bohemia. Gasthaus Jana therefore sits at the edge of one of Austria's best-known historic battlefields.

What happened near Jedenspeigen in 1278?

On 26 August 1278 the armies of Rudolf of Habsburg and Ottokar II of Bohemia met on the fields between Dürnkrut and Jedenspeigen. Ottokar was killed, and the battle laid the foundation for centuries of Habsburg rule in Austria. The battlefield is farmland today; its history is kept alive in Jedenspeigen and Dürnkrut.
